Why Online Shopping Is A Lot Safer Today

With the internet explosion of the late 1990s came the increased popularity of online shopping. As the number of online purchases grew by leaps and bounds every year, so too did the security of the shoppers’ financial information. There were many stories about people finding their credit cards maxed out or their checking accounts cleared.

Stories like this still happen today, but overall the internet is a more secure place to shop now than ever before. Here are some things that have made the internet more secure since its early days as well as a few tips for making safe online purchases.

Encryption methods are more secure. The standard encryption methods of today are much harder to crack than the ones that were in use during the early internet boom. If you’re visiting a secure site, you can be sure that any information you enter will be safe.

That’s not to say that fraud is nonexistent on the internet today; there will most likely always be cases where thieves obtain sensitive information, but compared to the tremendous number of online transactions that occur every day, the number of fraud cases is very low.

There are also fewer online vendors in general. After the dot com bubble burst years ago, there was a mass exodus of shady and illegitimate websites from the internet. There are still websites out there that scam people out of money, but it’s usually easy to spot them.

If you have experience with online shopping and using the internet in general, you’ll be able to tell the difference between a legitimate site and a fraudulent one. If you’d prefer, you can just stick to the big websites such as eBay and Amazon, which have a reputation to protect. You can also use services like PayPal to take your security one step further.

There are more security measures in place to prevent fraud by keeping thieves from ever getting your information. Many websites require that you sign up for a membership before you can buy something from their webstores. A lot of them have special encryption and even security checks beyond the typical password that may require you to answer a special question each time you log in. This is very common when it comes to the interface of online banks and other sites that store sensitive financial information of yours. All of these things can act as extra obstacles when it comes to protecting you from hackers.

So don’t worry that you’re going to be defrauded just by buying a couple of things online. By paying attention to the websites from which you’re ordering, especially during the checkout process, you can easily sniff out potential fraudulent transactions and you’ll find that shopping online is a safe and easy alternative.
